The road to Milford Sound

We got up and headed out on our way to Milford Sound knowing that we were spending a night in between. We headed into Te Anu one last time to run some errands for the guys and in the process of them shopping the battery died in the car. Go figure!! I only had the CD player on, and it was for 20 min….it was going to cost me $160 NZD for them to send someone out to help me jump the car. So I sent the guys out to find someone who had jumper cables. They found a couple who had some so thank god, we got rolling around 12 instead of around 11 or so. We decided to stop at a few places along the way to our campground we were going to stay at.
Our 1st stop was at Lake Mistletoe where we decided to do pack up our lunches and do the 20 min walk to the lake, have lunch and then head back to the car. It was a really small lake, but very secluded so it was nice and quiet. A few miles after this stop we stopped at Eglinton Valley. This was really pretty. It had wheat looking grass all in front of the mountains for a good half mile. There was a river that ran through it the closer you got to the mountains with crystal blue water. In the background there were the Earl Mountains and Mt. Eglinton which is 1859 meters high. (Im’ telling you, this metric system kills me because I have no idea how tall things really are, nothing to compare them to, other than ooooo wow those are HUGE or……dam those are tall! Ha!) As the guys and I were looking at the pictures I took, they said mentioned the scenery looked like it could be a windows background, lol it is so true!
After this we headed over to Mirror Lakes….this wasn’t as spectacular as I would of hoped for. The lakes were really tiny and because it was windy out, there was no mirror image of the mountains, just ripples of water and a few ducks. After that we drove the rest of the way to our campsite at Cascade Creek, even though it was still fairly early in the day I wanted to make sure we got a place to stay and not be too crowded. Thank goodness we came “early” because this placed filled up by 8pm and there were people everywhere. I can say, for the amount of people, it was actually still pretty quiet around us. I went to bed around 9pm, and read my book till I finished it (this bad boy was heavy so I can’t wait to leave it behind) and then tried to get as cozy as possible in my sleeping bag. I can’t tell you the last time I used a sleeping bag!!! I hate these damn things mainly cause I like to sleep with a leg out of my blankets, and I sleep on one side then another. Not really that easy to do in a rectangle shaped sleeping bag. (And forget about the mummy shaped ones, those are worse!)
Till Tomorrow
