Great Ocean Road

We got up really early today to head out to the Great Ocean Road. This is located in the south eastern part of Australia, west of Melbourne. We drove for a total of 13 hours, 380 miles round trip approximately from the time we left the hotel, till we got back. The Great Ocean Road starts in a town called Torquay and ends around Port Fairy. On the Great Ocean Road we drove around 121 miles, more counting places that you go to on stops and so forth. We didn’t get home till 12:45am, as a total on the Great Ocean Road we drove 98 miles. Unfortunately we didn’t get to do the whole thing because of timing. This road is VERY winding and the speed limits vary from one part to the next. Not to mention the roads seem a lot thinner over here and being new to driving on the left hand side of the road we took it a bit slower. On the drive home we had a family of Kangaroos cross the road in front of us, some kind of huge bird and a smaller slow animal that we couldn’t identify.
We stopped at a bunch of the famous places along the route.
Hutt Gully
Split Point
12 Apostles (even though there are only 8 now)
Apollo Bay
Loch and Gorge
Arch
London Bridge
The first thing that I can say about the G.O.R. is WOW. This is absolutely amazing! The colors of the water were not what I was expecting. I guess I was thinking it would be a deep dark blue color kind of like home but it isn’t. The water is all sorts of blues, aquamarine, turquoise, dark royal blue, and of course all of the sand that runs along the beach and under the water as the waves crash. To top all of that off, when the waves crash they create white beautiful bubbling water that looks like foam.
The side of the embankment where the beach met the rest of the land was stunning! The sheer cliffs were unbelievable! They kind of reminded me of the white cliffs of Dover but in totally different colors. Clays, sand, red, oranges, browns, a mixture of all of them, all in different layers running up and down the sides.
Each of the locations we got to visit were a little bit different. We drove through vineyards, barren land that had cattle, sheep and horses, rain forests and of course beaches and high cliffs. We got to see the sunset behind the Arch, and after that while we were there we got to see some little penguins come up on the beach. They are so small, about the size of a 2-liter bottle. Of course after that we had a 3-hour drive home lol.
Mother Nature is truly unbelievable, to have the chance to experience all of this, I am truly lucky. Being able to view all of the wonderful scenery today and pause to think really puts things into perspective of where I am in life. I count my blessings all of the time because you only have one life, and you never know when your time will come. Not to sound morbid but it is so true. Live each day to your fullest no matter what, tell people you love that you love them or miss them and that you are grateful for them. There is never a moment that shouldn’t be taken to let people know how much they mean to you. The same goes for friendships
I plan on adding more about this wonderful day but I have to head to bed to catch up on some serious beauty sleep ;)
Till next time
