On our second day in Rome we had a free day to do what we wanted to do. We decided to go with our group on a tour of the Vatican. This didn’t really interest me all that much but I figured I might as well see what all the “fuss” was about. Honestly.....as great as the tour was and our guide rocked, it was too much.

There are soooo many paintings and sculptures that after a while it got really repetitive. Not to mention this place is way over crowded, so it makes it hard to really enjoy the items you want to look at. I did learn some really cool facts though while I was in the Sistine Chapel. The famous picture with God and man touching fingers (The Creation of Adam) which was painted by Michelangelo....only within the past 50 years has something interesting been discovered. Michangelo did autopsies on dead people (obviously) but since he knew the anatomy of humans he added a piece of the body into this famous painting. Behind God, he painted the human brain, which is depicted as being cut in half. Some made the connection and it has been proven over and over by different people. Pretty cool to look at by too bad I don’t have any pictures due to not allowing us to take them.

St. Peter's Basilica was HUGE! These statues were made life size and bigger due to the size of the church. With all of these beautiful things to see we had one minor issue. MOM GOT LOST!!! Yes yes I said my mom got lost. Not a kid....a woman in her 50’s lol. She was missing for over an hour and a half! We could not find her anywhere in the church, chapel or any of the museums. I had a few people who were willing to help me find her at the end of the tour. Peter and Sue (from New Zealand) were more than willing to split up and look and even let me borrow one of their phones to keep in touch with them and our tour guide Ben. Wendy and Troy from Phoenix AZ, were also around to help me out. Everyone was very concerned especially Ben who was not on our tour but had gotten off the train to come help me. He is so very sweet! Needless to say, we found mom outside!!! She said she was looking up at the ceiling in one of the rooms taking a few pictures and the next thing she knew we were all gone. She couldn’t hear the guide over our headsets and she panicked a bit. She said she looked for us but ultimately she passed us because she went outside and was there for an hour or so. I am relieved that we were able to find her at the Vatican and not somewhere else. After she had calmed down, we decided to go shopping and had lunch.

We went back to the camping area where we were staying and took a nap. All of this walking around takes a lot of you, ya know! After our nap we went back out into the city to tour around again and grab dinner. Today, we must have walked another 8-10 miles, so we had a really hearty dinner and a bottle of wine to bring this great day to an end. Tomorrow we are off to Venice, so till then Ciao!
